Akchou started working in the field of spatial landscape ecology and wildlife research and conservation since 2005 in Laos and has extensive experience with Wildlife Conservation Society Lao PDR Program in developing a number of protected area management plans (Nam Kading, Nam Nyouang, Laving – Laveun and Khounxe–Nongma).

Akchou received a BA in Geographic Information Systems from the University of Southern Queensland (Australia) and an MA in Geographical Sciences from the Australian National University. She completed a postgraduate diploma programme with WildCRU (Zoology department, University of Oxford) in The International Wildlife Conservation Practice.

She completed her PhD in Zoology from University of Oxford with research focused on intra-guild interactions of wild felids and dhole in northern Laos.
